SEOUL / RankWire.AI / – South Korea’s outbound shipments surged 68.7% year-on-year in August to reach $98.25 billion, driven by sustained global demand for high-performance memory chips and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Official data released by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources showed that imports grew 22.5% to $63.51 billion over the same period, generating a net monthly trade surplus of $34.75 billion. The robust performance extends the trade expansion streak of Asia’s fourth-largest economy for a 15th consecutive month.

Semiconductor exports, the primary driver of national trade performance, soared 209% year-on-year to an all-time high of $46.65 billion. Growth in chip shipments was fueled by sustained capital expenditure programs among major global technology operators expanding data center networks and enterprise AI hardware deployments. The performance marks the third consecutive month in which semiconductor export volumes exceeded the $40 billion threshold. Additional information distributed by the Yonhap News Agency highlighted that computer product exports expanded 419.5% to $6.24 billion amid elevated global NAND memory pricing.

Ministry Data Confirms Monthly Trade Surplus Reaches $34.75 Billion

Energy and chemical sectors also contributed to monthly top-line gains. Petroleum product exports climbed 65.3% year-on-year to $6.84 billion, while petrochemical exports advanced 12.2% to $3.86 billion. Higher global crude oil prices provided unit-price support across refined export categories. Conversely, automobile exports contracted 29.8% to $3.85 billion. Government officials attributed the car shipment decline to temporary seasonal manufacturing shutdowns, revised summer holiday scheduling across major domestic automotive plants, and localized labor disputes.

Geographically, outbound deliveries to major trading partners demonstrated broad-based expansion. Exports to China surged 119.3% year-on-year to $24.1 billion, supported by high-volume shipments of memory chips and industrial machinery. Deliveries to the United States grew 89.3% to $16.5 billion, led by strong demand for enterprise computing hardware and advanced semiconductors. Trade ministry records indicate that Korean exporters maintained growth across seven of the nation’s nine primary regional destination markets during the August reporting cycle.

Computer Equipment Deliveries Reach Record High Monthly Volumes

Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jung-kwan stated in an official release that non-semiconductor exports expanded by 20% overall, pointing to a broader recovery across secondary export industries. In addition to core technology components, secondary battery exports grew 24% to $600 million, while biohealth shipments rose 22.3% to a record $1.41 billion on expanded European supply contracts. Korea’s August exports jump 68.7% to $98.25 billion as state trade officials continue monitoring foreign trade policy changes and global supply chain conditions.

Daily average export values, adjusted for working days, increased 72.5% year-on-year to $4.47 billion, marking four consecutive months above the $4 billion daily threshold. Macroeconomic analysts expect export momentum to remain anchored by global technology hardware demand entering the final quarter of the year. Government financial institutions will publish finalized quarterly trade balance summaries following the close of September data collection periods.
